France: An olfactory kit to help recover the sense of smell

A new tool paired with a webapp will guide people affected by a loss of smell in their recovery journey.

Anosmia is a disorder that causes the loss of the sense of smell, and is known as one of the most common side effects of Covid-19, negatively affecting the everyday lives of people who suffer from it.

Most people who suffered from anosmia due to Covid-19 had their sense of smell return within a span of two weeks. Nevertheless, when disorders affecting the sense of smell persist, olfactory rehabilitation appears to be necessary. Supported by the Givaudan Foundation, the Givaudan School of Perfumery teamed up with renowned institutions in the medical, research and design field to develop a specific olfactory rehabilitation method which comprises a high-quality reusable olfactory kit that is guided by a web application. Each participating institution offered specialised expertise to bring this innovation, called Ma Madeleine®, to life.

The technology not only targets central aspects of persistent olfactory loss due to Covid-19, but it also helps restore the sense of smell for people recovering from other illnesses affecting their ability to smell.

At present, the kit is in test phase.
