Brazil: An eco-safe approach to citrus disease

Agricultural research to develop new strategies to fight diseases and pests affecting citrus groves.

In Brazil, Huanglongbing disease (HLB), also known as ‘greening’, is threatening trees, harvests and livelihoods of many citrus growers. Normally, farmers tackle this destructive disease with chemical insecticides that eliminate the tiny, aphid-like insect that spreads it. However, not only can this harm the environment, but it can also contaminate the crop itself.

In response, our partners have been exploring alternatives to chemicals and found promising results with kaolin, a type of clay. Field trials show it can protect trees from both HLB and another disease called citrus canker, while reducing the need for harmful chemicals. This safer, science-backed approach has since been shared with hundreds of farmers through dedicated workshops giving them more sustainable ways to safeguard their orchards, protect the environment, and maintain their livelihoods.
