Hungary: Supporting marginalized youth

Helping young people in foster care thrive

Since 2021, Givaudan volunteers in Budapest, Hungary have partnered with an organisation dedicated to supporting marginalised children and teenagers in foster homes. Together, they organized activities like clothing donations and outdoor games, benefiting over 200 children and fostering a sense of community.

As the children grew older, new needs emerged, particularly for teenagers transitioning to adulthood. An assessment revealed key areas for support: feelings of belonging, personal aspirations, self-perception, and access to mental health services. In response, we joined in supporting the initiative, together developing a project tailored to these needs.

While this wellbeing programme was initially designed to boost confidence, it has since broadened to include practical life skills, career education, and emotional wellbeing. Beyond CV and job preparation, participants develop practical skills to manage money, plan for their futures, and reflect on their aspirations. Visits to Givaudan offices give them a first-hand look at life inside an international company, helping connect what they learn to
the world of work.

Alongside this, the programme also supports education around nutrition, financial literacy, mental health, and what it means to be an engaged member of their community, giving teenagers the confidence and tools to take their next steps in life. Every teenager reported greater confidence and readiness for further education or employment, and some have even begun mentoring peers in their foster homes.
