UK: Mood boosting game to improve the wellbeing of older people

Using fragrances to reinforce social interaction.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, elderly people were often isolated. In the UK, ‘Smell & Tell’ was developed as a fun game aimed at helping foster a sense of connec-tion, drawing directly on Givaudan’s fragrance expertise.

Covid-19 affected many individuals’ mental health in particular, the elderly living in care homes, who were isolated to safeguard them against the virus. To help improve their emotional wellbeing and foster socialisation, Givaudan volunteers created a mood-boosting board game called ‘Smell & Tell’. We supported Givaudan people to develop this culturally-relevant and ergonomically-designed board game, which was initially piloted in selected care homes and then distributed across the County of Kent, and Greater London. The ‘Smell & Tell’ game was extremely well received, bringing fun and interaction to over 8,400 elderly people residing in Southern England care homes.

“Our care home residents enjoyed the game so much that one of them was transported by the smell of bubble-gum to his youth and the group enjoyed a lovely reminisce about the product”
