Argentina: a library to foster reading, develop imagination and creativity

Reading is a key component of education and helps develop skills such as improving one’s vocabulary and literacy or fostering creativity and general knowledge.

Givaudan employees from Argentina wanted to help a foster Home to provide more educational tools to the girls supportes by the Home by refurbishing a space to create a library. The foster Home, located in the city of Buenos Aires, welcomes children and teenage girls whose parents are not able to care for them during the week. It offers them schooling, meals, accommodation and medical support. In addition, it also has a separate section where older women can live on a permanent basis.

Girls from Misericordia Home

Having a dedicated space for a library is a pedagogic way to nurture the love of reading, develop imagination, general culture and encourage social exchanges. As part of this collaboration, and with our help, Givaudan volunteers have also supported the selection of books (which will range from academic manuals, to novels and encyclopedias) and will be participating in annual “reading days” with the girls living in the Home.

Part of new library

Construction work on the library began in 2022 and the space was inaugurated in the first months of 2023 in an event attended by Givaudan volunteers. The space is equipped with a room to store books, a spacious room that serves as reading space and can be used to play board games and a multimedia area to watch and discuss films and documentaries.

"Looking at the surprised expressions on the faces of the 180 girls as they entered the library made all the work worthwhile" says Paula, Givaudan volunteer, during the inauguration day.
