India: Educational infrastructure and learning support for children in turmeric farming communities
Turmeric root is a raw material that can be used as a nutrition supplement as well as in fragrances. It is cultivated by smallholder producers in Karnataka state in southwestern India. To understand their living conditions and identify key needs in the communities, we undertook an initial scoping mission. It revealed that the refurbishment of public education infrastructure was one of the most pressing needs. We are partnering with a local non-profit organisation with expertise in creating sustainable and inclusive educational and livelihoods opportunities.

At five area schools, our partner is installing solar panels to ensure reliable access to electricity, water filtration systems to support better drinking water for students and school staff, and at one school - refurbishing sanitation facilities. An educational and awareness-raising programme accompanies the improved infrastructure to instill lifelong habits of cleanliness and hygiene, which will not only improve the students’ wellbeing but also foster a healthier school environment.
