India: Educational infrastructure and learning support for children in turmeric farming communities

Turmeric root is a raw material that can be used as a nutrition supplement. It is cultivated by smallholder producers in Karnataka state in southwestern India. To understand their living conditions and identify key needs in the communities, we undertook an initial scoping mission. It revealed that the refurbishment of public education infrastructure was one of the most pressing needs and that school closures due to COVID had strongly impacted children from less affluent households.

Through a partnership with a not-for-profit organization with experience in school construction, a new school with two classrooms has been built. Tutoring classes are also offered to help students catch up on learning gaps. Finally, the children are learning about good hygiene practices.
