France: Supporting blackcurrant producers

Bringing a buzz back to the blackcurrant fields of Burgundy

In Burgundy, France, we are helping blackcurrant producers to promote good agricultural practices, with the reintroduction of red mason bees that aid and sustain pollination. Launched in 2023, the initiative addresses the decline in pollinating insects, which has impacted the region’s blackcurrant crops. Blackcurrant buds are processed into aromatic extracts used in fine fragrances and flavours.

The project focuses on reintroducing red mason bees into the fields, using ‘bee hotels’ to support pollinator populations. Since the project’s inception, a cooperative of blackcurrant producers has seen a promising increase in yields, showing the potential when conditions are favourable.

In the longer-term, the initiative is expected to improve agricultural productivity, reduce pesticide use, and enhance soil health. Collaborating closely with a range of technical and scientific partners, we are helping blackcurrant farmers adapt to environmental challenges, reaping the economic benefits of pollinator restoration.
